Universal Credit will often provide more help with childcare if you qualify for a meaningful UC award. It can repay up to 85% of eligible childcare costs. Tax-Free Childcare normally covers 20% of the total bill: you pay £8 and the government adds £2.
That does not mean Universal Credit is automatically better. Your UC payment depends on household income, savings, housing, children and other circumstances. Tax-Free Childcare is usually the relevant option for working families who do not qualify for Universal Credit and meet its separate eligibility rules.
